Consultancy & Sponsored Projects
Consultancy Projects executed at TMI:
- Estimation of Resistance for the 19m Pilot Boat at the loaded draft using CFD
Details: In accordance with the requirements, CFD simulations were carried out for the Pilot Boat to predict its Effective power at different speeds of operation. Simulations were carried out in simulation software Star CCM+. Scope of work included to carry out 06 simulations at one loading condition (Full Load) at speeds of 12 knots, 13 knots and 17 knots with all appendages; at speeds of 12 knots and 17 knots with all other appendages but without propeller disc and at speed of 12 knots without all other appendages.
Project executed by: Dr. Sudhir Sindagi, Mr. Somanath Nirali
- Feasibility Study for the installation of VFD Drives on Cooling Water System of an LNG Carrier
Details: It is mandatory that SW pumps should be able to cover the maximum heat load of the cooling system under extreme environmental conditions. This is a situation which rarely occurs in every-day operations. Therefore, a SW pump chosen to fulfil this requirement would operate most of the time at full capacity unduly. In such cases, the recent trend is to promote the installation of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) electric motors (when applicable) to operate pumps in partial loads when the cooling system duty is less demanding (sailing in cold seawaters or low engine loads). Scope of the study included, based on the inlet and outlet pressures/temperatures of SW pumps calculate extreme operating flow ranges; to study the schematics of pipeline for the particular system and check whether the extreme flow rates calculated are suitable for the installed pipeline; If found feasible, suggest suitable VFD(s) for the same and to study effect of installation of VFD on erosion corrosion of pipeline.Project executed by: Dr. Sanjeet Kanungo, Dr. Sudhir Sindagi and Mr. Sanjay Dabadgaokar
- Investigate causes of delays in designing, manufacturing and testing a marine propulsion gearbox
Details: A reputed Indian manufacturing company in collaboration with a well-known international gear box manufacturing company had taken up the task of designing, manufacturing and testing a marine main propulsion gearbox. The Gearbox was for a government agency. However, the project ran into difficulties and was delayed. The matter finally came up for arbitration. The consulting team was to investigate the causes of delay and furnish a report.Project executed by: Dr. B.K. Saxena & Cdr(Retd) Sukanta Dasgupta.
- Investigation of Ship’s Grounding (On-site)
Details: The ship of a reputed Indian Shipping company has been grounded and TMI faculty member carried out an investigation to identify the root causes of Ship’s Grounding.
Project executed by: Capt. Krishnamurthy Iyer. - Investigation of Ship’s Grounding using Navigation Simulator
Details: A team of Faculty members from TMI carried out Simulations in Navigation Simulator to identify the root causes of Ship’s Grounding.Project executed by: Capt. Indranath Banerji.
- Assessment of requirements and Setting up firefighting system for port
Details: Based on the calculations, firefighting schematic & piping diagram for large port area has been prepared. Consultancy has been provided for the installation of the firefighting system at the port.
