Reefer Container Courses
Reefer containers carry cargo of perishable nature. Hence they require proper operation and maintenance throughout transportation. It is essential that Marine Engineers and Electrical Officers are well trained for same with adequate knowledge and skill to operate, maintain and troubleshoot the systems. These courses improve the same by lectures, group discussions, hands on training, simulation exercises, and logical troubleshooting with a refrigerated container and associated means.
1. Basic Reefer Container Operation & Maintenance Course
Duration: 2 days
Objective: To provide participants with basic skills and knowledge about operation and maintenance of reefer containers.
Eligibility: Students undergoing Diploma or Degree Programs; Professionals in related fields
Course Content:
First day:
- Basics of refrigeration and the operation of a vapour compression system.
- Various terminologies used in refrigeration system.
- Classification of refrigerant (CFC, HCFC and HFC) and their differences.
- F-gas regulation and GWP.
- Difference between various refrigerants (gases) based on their saturation temperature at atmospheric pressure.
- Need for a reefer container and types of refrigerated cargoes.
- Types of reefer container (general, controlled atmosphere systems, maxtend regulated system, AFAM).
- Identification of the fault in the system if temperature is not in range using code select, tools and P/T chart.
- Precautions to be taken while working in CA reefers.
- Cold treatment. Need of USDA sensors and temperature recording systems in reefers.
- Air flow diagram of a reefer container.
- Controlled atmosphere system working.
- Need of the various tools (eg: Refrigerant recovery compressor, vacuum pump, manifold gauge, electronic leak detector, recovery cylinder).
- General Familiarization of the reefer and identification of all components. (Practical)
Second day:
- Refrigeration system schematic reading of Carrier (69NT40), Thermoking (TK –MAGNUM), Daikin (LXE10E-A) and Startcool (SC - MCI40) reefer containers.
- Differences in the operation of the above mentioned reefers.
- Operation of modulation valve, quench valve, digital control valve, injection solenoid valve, Hot gas bypass valve, etc. (in Carrier, Thermoking, Daikin and Starcool reefer).
- Electrical circuit schematic and wiring diagrams reading of Carrier (69NT40), Thermoking (TK –MAGNUM), Daikin (LXE10E-A) and Startcool (SC - MCI40) reefer containers.
- Pressure / temperature chart of a particular refrigerant and its importance in trouble shooting.
- Loading the operational software and configuration for ML3, ML2i, ML2 controllers using programming cards. Using PCMCIA card for loading software.
- Cold checks before connecting electrical power supply in a reefer container. (Practical)
- Operation of the reefer container (Changing set point, Code selections, Alarm codes, Manual defrosting, Ventilation setting). (Practical)
- Identification of the correct operation of the system. (Practical)
- Pre-trip Inspection. (Practical)
- Identification of correct functioning of components of the system (Compressor, Condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, modulation valve, filter-drier). (Practical)
- Connecting manifold gauge set to check the pressure of the refrigerant. (Practical)
- Understanding the service valve construction. Front seating and back seating of the service valve. (Practical)
- Pumping down the unit. (Practical)
- Automatic pump down in Daikin reefers.
- Various alarm codes and their consequences. (Practical)

2. Advanced Reefer Container Operation & Maintenance Course
Duration: 3 days
Objective: To provide participants with Advanced skills and knowledge about reefer containers
Who Should Attend: Operational Level Engineers, Management Level Engineers, Electrical Officers, ETO students and Industry Professionals related to container refrigeration
Course Content:
First day:
- Basics of refrigeration and the operation of a vapour compression system.
- Various terminologies used in refrigeration system.
- Classification of refrigerant (CFC, HCFC and HFC) and their differences.
- F-gas regulation and GWP.
- Difference between various refrigerants (gases) based on their saturation temperature at atmospheric pressure.
- Need for a reefer container and types of refrigerated cargoes.
- Types of reefer container (general, controlled atmosphere systems, maxtend regulated system, AFAM).
- Identification of the fault in the system if temperature is not in range using code select, tools and P/T chart.
- Precautions to be taken while working in CA reefers.

- Basics of CO2 reefers (Carrier Natura Line) and safety precautions.
- Cold checks before connecting electrical power supply in a reefer container. (Practical)
- Operation of the reefer container (Changing set point, Code selections, Alarm codes, Manual defrosting, Ventilation setting, Configuration). (Practical)
- Identification of the correct operation of the system. (Practical)
- Pre-trip Inspection. (Practical)
- Identification of correct functioning of components of the system (Compressor, Condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, modulation valve, filter-drier). (Practical)
- Connecting manifold gauge set to check the pressure of the refrigerant. (Practical)
- Understanding the service valve construction. Front seating and back seating of the service valve. (Practical)
- Pumping down the unit. (Practical)
- Automatic pump down in Daikin reefers.
- Various alarm codes and their consequences. (Practical)
- Trouble shooting procedure on basis of the alarm codes. (Practical)
- Using test points for trouble shooting. (Practical)
Third day:
- Recovery of refrigerant from the system using recovery compressor and storing it in the recovery cylinder. (Practical)
- Evacuation of the system using vacuum pump. (Practical)
- Pressure testing the system using Nitrogen.
- Refilling the system with refrigerant in HP and LP side. (Practical)
- Adding oil in the compressor using a hand pump, by using the vacuum pump, and by using the suction service valve in emergency cases.
- Remove air from the system. (Practical)
- Checking for leakage using electronic leak detector and soap solution. (Practical)
- Demonstration of the usage of tools like pipe bender, flaring tools, swaging tools, portable butane torch brazing, etc. (Practical)
- Emergency operation (FC bypass in starcool, emergency coil cap in Daikin, permanent magnets to operate solenoid valves, running unit with one evaporator fan, use of external blower in case of condenser fan failure, bypassing modulation valve, LP sensor configuration change in Thermoking, handling relay board failure in Themoking, using emergency bypass module in case of controller failure, etc)
- Emergency operation in case of major electrical failures which are not mentioned above. (Practical)

3. Virtual Advanced Reefer Container Operation & Maintenance Course
Duration: 3 days

- Types of reefer container (general, controlled atmosphere system, modified atmosphere system, Maxtend regulated system).
- Precautions to be taken while working in CA reefers.
- Need for Cold treatment, USDA sensors and temperature recording systems in reefers.
- Need of the various tools eg: Refrigerant recovery compressor, vacuum pump, manifold gauge, electronic leak detector, recovery cylinder.
- General Familiarization of the reefer. (Video)
Second day:
